HEARING SCREENING PROGRAM for SCHOOL CHILDREN

“Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people.”

~Helen Keller

What is the need?

  • Health checkup is critical for early diagnosis and treatment for any individual
  • In formative years , sensory checks are critical – Eye and Hearing
  • Children cannot perform in school if they don’t have right input – i.e. normal hearing.
  • In USA , about 8 % school going children have been noted to have hearing impairment
  • Our research in India with @1000 children also indicates 6-8% children needs symptoms of hearing impairment and need further screening

What will happen if hearing loss goes undetected?

It will result into:

  1. Lack of concentration and poor grades
  2. Inability to articulate sounds and words resulting into poor speech and language development
  3. behavioural issues like frustration and anxiety

With early diagnosis and treatment all this can be prevented.

Let us understand the”EAR”

  1. The human ear consists of three parts- the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
  2. The ear canal of the outer ear is separated from the air-filled tympanic cavity of the middle ear by the eardrum.
  3. The middle ear contains the three small bones, the ossicles, which are involved in the transmission of sound .
  4. The inner ear contains the otolith organs- the utricle and saccule, and the semicircular canals belonging to the vestibular system, as well as the cochlea of the auditory system.

Features of HearWell

  1. It is a mobile app that does the hearing assessment
  2. Non-Invasive and quick test which can be done in < 2 mins
  3. HearWell is effective screening measure for moderate or severe degrees of hearing loss
  4. It can identify - Normal inner ear function vs Hearing loss due to conductive or sensorineural issues

What is our role?

  1. Provide hearing screening at affordable cost
  2. Help in early detection of hearing loss
  3. Provide test reports and guide parents in further testing and consultation

In summary –

  1. Hearing is critical for Child’s learning process
  2. Early screening and adequate diagnosis helps to delay further speech and language development
